Xinmin Weekly December 23, 2024

Yu Garden, an architectural complex of pavilions, rocks, pools and plants built in Shanghai 400 years ago, epitomizes the legacy of Spring Festival, celebrations listed by UNESCO as a world intangible cultural heritage on December 4, 2024. A retreat from the city’s bustling commercial area, the garden is welcoming the festive celebrations with lanterns, delicacies and traditional ballad singing. The lantern show, which has illuminated the garden every Spring Festival for three decades, has introduced designs inspired by the ancient mythological text The Classic of Mountains and Seas in recent years. Traditional local snacks and treats served in famous local restaurants, overlooking the ponds and zigzag bridge, are freshly cooked. In recent years, traditional ways of celebration are popular again, especially among the young, who flock to the garden to experience a first-hand taste.
