The Decline and Renewal of Liberal Arts

Xinmin Weekly April 2, 2025

By NewsChina Updated Jun.1

Universities in China have been slashing certain majors, including Chinese, advertising and education in liberal arts due to shrinking admissions, low employment rates and impractical course designs. While most students head to STEM disciplines to meet the country’s development strategies by studying chips, AI and quantum theory, those who believe in humanity’s irreplaceable roles suggest the need for interdisciplinary studies such as AI ethics to integrate liberal arts into sciences. Some argue that while subjects like journalism and foreign languages decline, disciplines such as philosophy and literature that can cultivate critical thinking and compassion should be learned over a lifetime. Experts advocate for less restrictive liberal arts studies, saying that rote memorization runs counter to its true values.
